Lungern See – fast facts
Lake Lungern (Lungern See in German) is a Swiss lake located in the canton of Obwalden and a perfect spot for hiking in Switzerland. It is situated in the Sarner valley, at an elevation of 1,114 meters above sea level. The lake is approximately 3.5 kilometers long and 0.5 kilometers wide, with a maximum depth of about 35 meters. The surrounding area is home to the charming village of Lungern and the beautiful countryside of the Swiss Alps. The lake is a popular spot for hiking in Switzerland, swimming and fishing, as well as sailing and windsurfing. The surrounding area is also home to several ski resorts, making it a popular destination for winter sports as well.
Some eye candy below – we took this picture during our hike around the lake during Winter. We can still feel the freezing cold we experienced on this day, but the views were worth it!

Hiking in Switzerland for ‘beginners’ – Rundweg Lungernsee
One of our favourite hikes in Lungern is called ‘Rundweg Lungerersee‘ (note ‘Rundweg’ basically refers to a round trip), which offers spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding mountains – as can be seen in the picture above taken during one of many times that we visited Lake Lungern. This may not be a hike with crazy elevation, or a hike that boosts your heart rate above 180 BPM, but regardless we added this one to our list of best hiking trails in Switzerland.
The hike is approximately 10 kilometers long, and depending on your pace can take approximately 3 hours. In our experience it will take less than three hours (e.g. more in 2,5 hours range), but add in some extra time to absorb the breathtaking views and taking 1000’s of pictures for your instagram account and making your friends jealous ;-).
Diesselbach Waterfall
There are many amazing viewpoints along the way, however one of the spots you should not be missing when hiking in Switzerland regards the Diesselbach Waterfall on the Southside of the lake (not too far from the parking area mentioned further below in this post).
